You will have access to a wide range of learning and teaching strategies. Modules may include seminars, lectures and group discussions and projects, with many utilising individual and peer presentation format. Given that the programme is primarily for staff already working in the Further Education and Skills Sector (FESS), maximum use of student experience and expertise is made, including student-led sessions aimed at sharing examples of good practice with colleagues. Modules include self-directed study activities, investigations and e-based learning. With regards to assessment, you will undertake six module assignments to include: completion of progress log; teaching practice observation; peer observation; micro teach; presentation and essay. Since September 2008, Ofsted has required all providers of initial teacher education programmes to assess the attainment of trainees when they complete their programmes. This will take place at the end of the programme using the Ofsted four point scale (consisting of ‘Outstanding’, ‘Good’, ‘Requires Improvement’ and ‘Inadequate’). The grading process will contribute to your progress record and impact upon your overall profile. In addition to the summative portfolio of module assignments at the end of each year of the programme, there will be an assessment of your progress throughout the programme which is intended to support your own learning and development. This process will be set out in section C of your progress log and will involve you assessing your progress against the following three key aspects at points throughout the course: Planning; Teaching; and Knowledge and Understanding. You will use the teaching standards to inform your judgement.
You will be required to attend the College for one three-hour class per week during term time. In the 2015/16 academic year, classes for the first year will take place on Wednesday 4.00 – 7.00 pm at the Ashford campus and a choice of Monday or Tuesday 4.00 – 7.00 pm will be available at the Tonbridge campus. Please note that this information is subject to change for subsequent academic years. You will be expected to set aside approximately two to four hours per week to carry out planning, research and assignment work outside the timetabled classes. You will also need to be employed in an appropriate teaching position for at least 40 hours in the first year and 60 hours in the second year.
The programme will provide you with a non-threatening environment in which to practice your teaching and learning strategies. You will be encouraged to work within a team to produce presentations and a course design proposal. You will also develop your critical, analytical and reflective skills throughout, considering both your own practice as well as the theoretical perspectives of education.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University and in 2014 the quality of the University's initial teacher education for Further Education was judged by Ofsted to be 'outstanding'. West Kent and Ashford College was visited as part of this inspection. You will have full access to facilities and resources at the University, including the comprehensive library facilities as well as a well maintained Virtual Learning Environment (BlackBoard).
